Intro

In early 2021, I stumbled upon an e-commerce idea that felt perfectly poised for success: custom climbing stickers.

Original concept of customized climbing stickers.

It wasn't just a niche idea; it was a strategically sound one because it had a built-in competitive edge. It wasn't easily replicable and required a slight degree of custom work, which is exactly what we always recommend when starting in digital marketing or e-commerce.

The Power of Customization

Most new sellers fail because they compete in a race to the bottom. If you try to sell a plain set of coasters online, no one will pay your $5+ price when they can get 20 for the same price on Amazon. You have no margin, no edge, and no reason for a customer to choose you.

Customization is the solution. Amazon can't instantly put a customer's face on a coaster. They can't sell a smiley face sticker for $7, but a customer will pay $7 for a sticker of their pet, a friend, or themselves. Creating this custom, personal product builds a high barrier to entry against large competitors.

The initial concept, climbing stickers, fit this model perfectly. A dynamic sticker of a climber in a unique position is a cool, personal piece of art.

But as I began building the brand, I quickly realized the opportunity was much wider. The appeal wasn't exclusive to climbing; people wanted personalized stickers of themselves doing anything: biking, making a silly face, or simply of their beloved dog. The underlying process—taking an image and using an automatic cutter—was the same regardless of the subject.

So, instead of limiting the idea, I created the brand ASA Sticker, a name that allowed for easy category expansion and a good SEO foundation. I was right to expand: it turned out to be a big hit!

This case study covers a custom sticker-printing ecommerce brand where customers uploaded their own photos, and I turned them into stickers. Using Facebook Ads and Reddit Ads on a Shopify store, the campaign scaled quickly, generating consistent profits during the holiday season.
